PRACTICAL INFORMATION

GETTING TO THE MEDIATHEQUE (CONFERENCE SITE) FROM THE HOTELS

A. By foot

A.1. From Saint Jean (map 6)

From Oursin (hotel 9) the Médiathèque is within 3'. From Le Panoramique (hotel 7) or La Costière (hotel 8), take Albert 1er south and then Bd Gal de Gaulle south, along the stadium; turn left at Allée des Brises (narrow street); take the steps leading down; continue on Montée du Cap; left on Claude Vignon; right on Libération; right on Jean Mermoz to the Médiathèque (total time 15' to 20').

A.2. From the Pierre et Vacances/Patricia area (map 3 and then 6)

Follow the narrow street Ange Gardien (map 3) south-east, past the Patricia to Pont Saint Jean; take Jean Monnet east and down, past the Riviera Palace; just before two public phones, right on footpath "Promenade Maurice Rouvier" which leads to Saint Jean (map 6); continue on Denis Semeria and Jean Mermoz to the Médiathèque (total time 25' to 35').

A.3. From Beaulieu hotels (map 4 and then 6)

Walk to the Casino at the intersection of Fernand Dunan and Albert 1er (the latter is reached by way of Gauthier Vignal and Yougoslavie when coming from hotels Artemis and Comte de nice); cross Fernand Dunan and take steps leading to the beach; about halfway down turn right on a footpath parallel to Fernand Dunan; turn left on footpath "Promenade Maurice Rouvier"; continue as explained in A.2. (total time 25' to 35').

B. By car

From the various maps available it should be obvious how to reach the center of Saint Jean. One way streets are marked with arrows. Various free parking areas are indicated as P on map 6. The parking area furthest north is more likely to have available space in the morning. The parking area *P at the south east end of the harbor has special reserved parking for ETC-7 (you pay 20F/day and we add 16F). Tell the superviser that you are a participant of the "Congress". Driving out of the Saint Jean Cap Ferrat peninsula between 16:00 and 19:00 can be a problem because of car congestions near Pont Saint Jean. If headed for the Pierre et Vacances/Patricia area, take the alternative route marked AL on map 7 which puts you on Av. Grasseuil (from here use map 3); left on Louise Bordes; over the railway bridge to Pierre et Vacances. If headed for Beaulieu, take the alternative route marked AL' (from here use map 4); right on Jean Monnet: you are in Beaulieu (from here use map 4).

C. By special ETC-7 tourist trains (free)

The tourist trains (T-trains) are mock trains traveling on the road at a top speed of 25km/h. Each morning a T-train to the Médiathèque will leave from the Pierre et Vacances (PeV) area and another one from the center of Beaulieu; they return at the end of the daily event. The PeV T-train stop is on the main road (basse corniche), just above PeV (crossed circle on map 3). The Beaulieu T-train stop is on Bd Maréchal Joffre at the intersection with Bd Marinoni, in front of the vegetable shop "8 à HuiT" about halfway between hotel Marcellin and hotel Artemis (crossed circle on map 4). The T-trains are reaching the Médiathèque (Conference site) by way of Bd Libération and Av. Jean Mermoz in Saint Jean. In case of traffic congestion near the intersection of these streets it may be best to walk to the Conference (less than 2'): walk to the end of Libération and turn right on Jean Mermoz (cf. map 6).

Morning schedule

Tuesday (special because first-day registration)

Leave Pierre et Vacances (PeV) at 7:45; leave Beaulieu at 8:10

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

Leave PeV and Beaulieu at 8:30

Return schedule (two T-trains marked for destination)

Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday

Leave Médiathèque for PeV and Beaulieu at 19:15

Thursday

Leave Médiathèque for PeV and Beaulieu at 16:15

The PeV T-train has a capacity of 54 and the Beaulieu T-train a capacity of 36. The number of ETC-7 participants residing in the PeV and Beaulieu areas are, respectively, 69 and 52. Given that a number of participants have cars and that walking is strongly encouraged, the capacities of the T-trains should be sufficient. There are extra T-trains on Thursday evening (see BANQUET).

For residents of hotels Panoramique and La Costière who wish not to walk, a free taxi (capacity 8 passengers) will be available near hotel Panoramique (schedule : Tuesday : 8:30, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday : 8:40. Leave Médiathèque at 19:15 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and at 16:15 on Thursday).

TAXIS

Taxis are available at the Beaulieu railway station (phone 0493010346) and on Av. Denis Semeria in Saint Jean (locations marked T on maps 4 and 6). They can also be ordered through hotel desks and conference staff. Finally, you may call 0609120178, 0607584595, 0609085437. Taxis in the Nice area are expensive: about 50F from Beaulieu station to the Médiathèque and about 300F to the airport (add 10% gratuity).

BANQUET SCHEDULE AND LOCATION

The banquet is taking place on Thursday July 2 at the Grand Hotel du Cap Ferrat (locations D and E on map 7) from 19:45 (outdoors unless the weather is bad). First, drinks will be served in the park of the hotel on a cliff overlooking the sea at the very tip of Cap Ferrat (location D). Around 20:30 we shall start moving to the "Club Dauphin" restaurant which is in front of the swimming pool near sea level (location E). This is reached in 4' by a nice and easy path; tired or handicapped persons can take a (very slow) cable railway. Diner will be over by 23:00 - 23:30.

BANQUET TRANSPORTATION

T-trains to the Grand Hotel are leaving from PeV at 19:15 and 19:50, from Beaulieu at 19:50 and from the Médiathèque (Conference site) at 19:15. About 10' to 15' after each departure they will stop briefly in front of the stadium on Bd Gal de Gaulle (crossed circle on map 7) to pick up guests residing at hotels Panoramique and La Costière. Two T-trains leave from Grand Hotel for PeV and for Beaulieu at 23:15 and again two T-trains at 23:45.

If you are in good shape you may also enjoy walking all the way from the center of Saint Jean to the Grand Hotel in about 30' (maps 6 and 7). You can either take the footpath at the south end of Claude Vignon which takes you to an entrance of the Grand Hotel swimming pool (marked "privé"; you may have to show your ETC-7 badge) or you may walk up the Montée du Cap and the steps to Bd Gal de Gaulle which you can follow all the way to the destination (you can also follow Plan des Abeilles and Av. de la Mer which have less cars). If you are really adventurous and your walk originates at PeV or in Beaulieu, the total time will be about 1h. It is not recommended to walk back after the banquet.

BANQUET TICKETS: VERY IMPORTANT

Attendance of the banquet is included for registered participants. Participants will be asked to show their ETC-7 badge at the entrance of the Grand Hotel. Practical constraints severely limit the number of additional guests at the banquet. Only a handful of guest tickets (at 300F/person) have been reserved so far. If you wish to bring along a guest you should purchase a banquet guest ticket as soon as possible.

EVENING EVENTS

We shall have two events in French intended for the general public of Saint-Jean Cap Ferrat and neighboring cities.

• On Wednesday, July 1 at 20:30, our colleague Uwe Ehrenstein will give a talk "Turbulence et Nage des Dauphins", followed by an informal discussion between the public and conference participants. Those who are able to understand French are encouraged to attend.

• On Friday, July 3 at 20:30, the astrophysicist, Hubert Reeves will give a talk entitled: "L'Univers et la Turbulence". Given that H. Reeves is extremely well known, a fairly large crowd is expected.

RESTAURANTS

During the Conference lunches will be served at two restaurants "Skipper" and "Gourmet Italien" on the harbor (marked R on map 6) within 3' or 4' walking time: follow the harbor quay first east and then north. The tables are marked for ETC-7. Please use the lunch tickets in the Conference package (each day has a different color which will be announced) and give it to the ETC hostess at the restaurant. If you are vegetarian, please inform the hostess and give your name each day. Based on the data for the first day we shall revise the number of vegetarian meals.

For the evening meals a vast choice of restaurants at all kind of prices is available. The street maps of Beaulieu and of Saint Jean provided in the Conference package have lists of restaurants on their back. Special arrangements have been made with two places: at La Costière in Saint Jean (number 8 on map 2 and 6; phone 04 93 76 03 89) one can expect to find a very good meal for 120F (without wine); at Patricia (number 2 on map 2 and 3; phone 04 93 01 06 70) one can eat for around 65-78F without regretting it. It may be advisable to call for reservations. From Pierre et Vacances (hotel 1 on map 3) a nice walk of about 15' leads to the old town and harbor of Villefranche (cross the railway bridge, walk down the steps and follow along the sea for about 1km); plenty of fish restaurants are available; they are often expensive but much less expensive ones are found within minutes by walking up into the old town streets.

BREAKFAST AND COOKING

All hotels serve breakfast. An exception is Pierre et Vacance; we therefore made an arrangement with hotel Patricia, located on the same small street Ange Gardien as PeV, about 200m south-east (hotel 2 on map 3) where breakfast (23F/person) will be served from 7:00 on Tuesday and from 7:30 on other days. At the Pierre et Vacance apartments there are cooking facilities but participants may have little time to buy their own food (the food stores are in the center of Beaulieu and of Saint Jean).

FOREIGN EXCHANGE NEWSPAPERS, TELEPHONE CALLS, TRAVEL, ETC

There is a money exchange office (B on map 6) less than 50 meters from the Médiathèque. A special newstand with French and international press will be available inside the Médiathèque just before each morning session. Otherwise, French and international newspapers can be bought at several locations, in particular at the Beaulieu railway station and in Saint Jean at location K on map 6 (1' from the Médiathèque). At the same places and in tobacco shops (E on maps 5 and 6) telephone cards can be bought which can be used in any public telephone (D on maps 5 and 6 and inside PeV). This is much cheaper than calling from hotels or from the payphone inside the Médiathèque. Cash distributors are available at locations A on maps 5 and 6. There is a travel agent in Beaulieu (agence Vogel, 0493010041, location L on map 5).

ETC-7 INFORMATION

Please avoid asking U. Frisch non-scientific questions (more than one thousand hours spent preparing the Conference; now I look forward to enjoying it).

For questions relating directly to ETC-7 ask the Conference staff (usually in the entrance hall of the Médiathèque; they have blue badges). They can also help you if you need to call a taxi, contact airlines about changes in reservations, etc.

For more practical questions (beaches, quality of water, where to buy things, make rental reservations, reservations for sightseeing tours, bus and train schedules, etc.) there is an ETC-7 practical information office at the "Jardin d'Orient" on Jean Mermoz (location J on map 6; 1' from the Médiathèque).

CONFERENCE POSTER AND PHOTO

There is a limited number of posters of the Conference left. You can purchase them from the Conference staff for 50F each. On Wednesday, July 1 at 12:30 (just before the lunch break) a Conference photo will be taken on the steps of the church just above the Médiathèque. The photograph (15X21cm with the name and site of the Conference) will be on display the next day. If you wish to order one, please take a special photo envelop (available from the Conference staff), write your full address, including the country, very legibly, introduce a 50F note into the envelop and give it to the Conference staff. The photo should reach you within a week or two (more if you live in Australia).

LEISURE INFORMATION

Beaches

There are many beaches in the immediate neighborhood of the Conference site and of the hotels. They are clearly marked on the various maps. The beach at the north end of the Saint Jean harbor is particularly popular. Plage Passable (north west of the Cap Ferrat peninsula) is a sandy beach. The Petite Afrique beach (north east end of Beaulieu) has sand and palm trees. At the south tip of Cap Ferrat (near the light house) there are several accesses to the water by steps. Water temperature is expected to be around 23C.

Walks

There are many pleasant footpaths (promenades) along the shores of Saint Jean Cap Ferrat (map 7).

• Maurice Rouvier, along the north east coast is the best foot access from Beaulieu to the Conference (suggestion: take it early in the morning, go for a swim at the harbor beach in Saint Jean, have breakfast on the harbor in Saint Jean at one of many cafes withing 2' of the Conference) .

• Pointe Sainte Hospice circles (in 25') the very beautiful secondary peninsula south east of the Médiathèque

• From Claude Vignon (map 6), near the center of the Saint Jean village, a foothpath around the south tip of Cap Ferrat leads in 1 hour to the Passable beach. The views are spectacular but the sun can be fierce.

Additional pleasant walks include Av. Bellevue, Av. Centrale and Chem. du Sémaphore in the central part of the peninsula (see separate map of Saint Jean Cap Ferrat).

Local sightseeing

In Saint Jean

• The Fondation Ephrussi de Rotschild (A on map 7; open 10:00-18:00, 19:00 from July 1) is of major interest (paintings, gardens, view).

• The zoo (B on map 7, open 9:30-19:00) is in a pleasant park.

In Beaulieu

Villa Kerylos, a reconstitution of an antique Greek villa, is of some interest (G on map 6; open 10:30-12:00 and 14:00-18:00; 10:00 - 19:00 from July 1)

Villefranche

The harbor and the old town are very attractive and can be reached by a pleasant walk from PeV or Beaulieu (map 3; from PeV cross the railway bridge, walk down the steps and follow along the sea for about 1km).

More distant sightseeing (only a few places of major interest are mentioned)

The Chagall museum (about 1km north east of the Nice central station; open 10:00-18:00, closed on Tuesdays) is outstanding.

The medieval village of Eze (on a cliff at 400m above the sea; 6 km from Beaulieu, reached in 15' by car or taxi) has a spectacular view and many interesting shops.

The Oceanographic museum in Monaco (10km from Beaulieu; open 9:00-19:00, 20:00 from July 1) is one of the best, worldwide.

For more sightseeing information and tours (e.g. to Saint Paul de Vence) see Agence Vogel (L on map 5) or the ETC-7 practical information office (J on map 6).
