Lagrange laboratory recruits an "Ingénieur de recherche (IR)" to support scientific analysis and software development for ESA’s Euclid satellite mission (Deadline: September 30th 2017).

Context : The Lagrange laboratory (Nice, France) and the French national space center (CNES) offer a research engineer position (“Ingénieur de Recherche”) to help with the preparation of the Euclid space mission, planned to be launched in 2021. The distribution and evolution of the galaxy clusters will constitute one of the cosmological probes of that mission. In the perspective of the Ground Segment operations, some cluster detection and characterization code has been prototyped and tested against simulated data catalogs.

Mission: contribute to the development and integration of the processing functions (« PF ») related with the detection and characterization of the galaxy clusters, in accordance with the Euclid mission framework and specification.

Contract duration: one year, can be renewedup to 3 or 4 years. Ideally, the contract may start in November 2017. This position is funded by the CNES.

Main activities:

  • Contribute tothe coding, testing, integration and documentation of our software in accordance with the Euclid development and production environment framework.

  • Be in charge of the release life cycle of the PF.

  • Exchange experience and requirement with the researchers of the scientific groups, the quality & insurance department, and with the engineers of the « Science Data Centers », to ensure the validation, verification and conformity of our softwares.

Required skills:

  • Strong competences in software engineering, working knowledge of C++ and Python and scientific computating. Some knowledge or experience in the field of astronomy is an asset

  • Working knowledge of well known software engineering tools, versionning tools (git), forge (such as gitlab), build and testing frameworks. Knowledge of continuous software integration is a plus.

  • Good level in spoken and written English. Knowledge of French is an asset

Educational background: Software engineering degree, or equivalent qualification


The successful candidate will be integrated in the engineering and scientific teams of Lagrange laboratory in Mont-Gros, located on the heights of Nice (France). (S)he will interact with the CNES and French laboratories involved in the SGS, as well as with scientists from the “Clusters of Galaxies” group, distributed all over Europe.
